Hello Everyone!

Valentine’s day is only a couple of weeks away and I have come up with a cute little project. A Key chain that will make a great gift for someone special. It will also look great on a zipper pull on a backpack or on other bags.

Here is how I made it:

Material:
5″x10″ background fabric
5″x10″ thin iron on batting or other thin batting
Scraps for 2 heart appliqués
11″ mini pom pom ribbon
2 1/2″ pink ribbon, 3/8″ – 1/2″ wide
3/4″ split ring
1/2″ swivel hook (optional)

Iron on or baste the batting to the back of the background fabric. Quilt it any way you like it. I did straight lines, 1/2″ apart with a thicker machine embroidery thread.

Make a heart template in cardboard or template plastic. The heart should be about 2″-2 1/2″ wide. Cut out 2 heart shapes from the appliqué fabric and baste it to the background fabric. I prefer to use fusible web, but pinning or fabric glue works well too. Appliqué the  hearts using your preferred method. Make sure there is at least 1″ between the shapes and between the shapes and the edges of the background fabric. I have written two blogposts on raw edge appliqué that you can find here and here. I used a satin stitch and a shiny rayon thread. This is a good project to play around with different embellishments, but normal thread is fine to of course.

Cut out 2 circles that are about 4″ in diameter from the background fabric with the hearts centred in the circles. Use a big cup, small bowl or anything round that you can trace around.

Baste the pom pom ribbon on the right side of one of the circles around the edge. The pom poms should be facing the middle of the circle. Fold the ribbon in half and baste raw edges even with raw edge of circle just “above” the heart. Place the circles right sides together, making sure the hearts are facing the same way. Stitch around the circle on top of the pom pom basting stitches. Leave about 1 1/2″ open and turn to the right side. Fill with scraps of toy fill or batting if desired and slip stitch the opening closed by hand.

Attach the split ring to the ribbon and you are done.
